IELTS SPEAKING CUE CARD

[PART 2]

You should say:

  • what it is
  • when you knew it
  • how you learned it

and explain why you are interested

A N S W E R

When I was a middle schooler, my mom asked me to plant a cabbage rose in a flower pot on a sunny and scorching afternoon. As I was a kid at that time, I just obeyed my mom’s orders without any knowledge about planting, especially the best practices of planting a rose. I just did it for the sake of obeying my mom.

However, a few weeks later, and to my surprise that cabbage rose grew healthily and beautifully and my mom was elated and complimented me saying that I had green fingers. Since then, I became interested in planting and learned about botany or plant science on my own by reading some articles online.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

  Scorching [adj.] – very hot

For the sake of [phrase] – if one does something for the sake of something, one does it for that purpose to achieve that result

Elated [adj.] – to be very happy

To have green fingers [phrase] – to be good at gardening that their plants grow well

Botany [noun] – the study of plants; also called plant science or plant biology

A few years later, I became a high school student and I needed to study biology as it’s part of the science education curriculum in our school. Interestingly, our biology teacher branched out into teaching us about botany or plant science which thrilled me, simply because at that time I had already started gardening at home – I did have some ornamental plants and I grew some vegetables.  I was thinking then, that what I could learn from my teacher would be very useful for me.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Branch out [phrasal verb] – to explore something new

Thrilled [adj.] – excited

Ornamental [adj.] – decorative

During our classes, I learned the importance of plants to humans, animals, and other living organisms. I learned that plants are fundamental as they generate food, oxygen, fiber,  fuel, and medicine, among others that would help us live or the other life forms to exist. What made me feel great was when I did learn the important role of plants in the reduction of pollution. That alone encouraged me to continue my hobby of gardening.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Fundamental [adj. as used in the answer] – basic; of central importance

Generate [verb] – produce or create

Reduction [noun] – the act of minimizing something

Now, I’ve continued to broaden my understanding of plant science by reading books and some valuable articles online. And I must say, it’s definitely helpful because I have become self-sufficient in food since I’ve grown my own fruits and vegetables at home which is completely helpful during this pandemic, knowing that food prices these days are insanely high. I hope people will realize the importance of planting or gardening. Hadn’t my mom asked me to plant that cabbage rose, I wouldn’t have discovered my interest in plants which later on led me to enjoy learning about plant science.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

  Broaden [verb] – widen

Self-sufficient [adj.] – needing no outside help in satisfying one’s basic needs

Insanely [adv.] – to an extreme degree

PART 3

What’s the best invention in the last one hundred years?

Well, without a doubt, it’s the internet! Since its invention, our lives have changed dramatically as we can easily connect with other people around the world, we can access various information effortlessly, and more importantly, different kinds of jobs have been generated, as a result, life has become more convenient for all of us. Thanks to Tim Berners-Lee who is the brains of the World Wide Web, all of the things that we’re now enjoying doing online are the end product of his brilliance.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

  Dramatically [adv.] – greatly

Generate [verb] – produce; create

The brains of something [phrase] – the most intelligent person involved in something

End product [noun] – something that is the result of or is created by an activity or process

What’s the influence of science on human life?

Basically, science is life! From the moment we wake up till the moment we go to bed, science is involved. The food that we eat is a product of agricultural science; the skin and hair care products, the medicine that we take, and the cosmetics that we use are examples of chemical science; the cars, computers, and smartphones that we comfortably and conveniently make use of every day are from technological science. These are just some examples of how science affects us every single day of our lives. Science plays an important role in our existence; science is life and life itself is also one kind of science.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Agricultural science [noun] – dealing with food and fiber production and processing

Chemical science [noun] – the science of matter; dealing with the composition of substances and their properties and reactions

Technological science [noun]  – the practice of engineering design; man-made

Make us of [phrase] – use for a purpose

What can individuals do for scientific research?

Realistically, I don’t think every one of us has the capacity to contribute something valuable to one scientific research project since not everyone has specialized knowledge, skills, or experience. I believe scientific research is only conducted by academicians or scientists, doctors, engineers, and the like, in other words, those who have the highest level of education.

However, ordinary people can be used as samples or subjects for some scientific study or research. One good example is the Harvard Study of Adult Development tracking the lives of almost 800 men for 75 years to know some clues about what leads a man to have a healthy and happy life. In that study, men from different backgrounds are the subjects, and researchers annually ask them about their lives in general to collect data that would help their research. So, for that kind of research, common people can participate or contribute something important then, other than that, I doubt.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Capacity [noun] – someone’s ability to do a certain thing

Academicians [noun] – an honorific title to denote a full member of an academy that has a strong influence on national scientific life

Other than [preposition] – except for

What influence can international cooperation in science bring about?

Well obviously, international collaboration in science promotes personal relationships of mutual respect and trust around the world. The scientists and engineers who are involved in scientific research play active roles in international diplomacy around the issues of science and technology like climate change, and nuclear arms control, among others.

Not only that, working with other countries provides access to valuable expertise, for instance, the gathering of epidemiologists from different countries to work hand in hand in combatting an epidemic. They conduct a collaborative study to understand the case profoundly which will lead to the creation of vaccines. So basically, the collaboration of different countries in the field of science has more positive influences on humankind and the world.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Collaboration [noun] – cooperation

Nuclear arm [noun] – weapon such as an atomic bomb

Expertise [noun] – expert skill or knowledge in a certain field

Epidemiologist [noun] – a person who is an expert in the branch of medicine that deals with the incidence, distribution, and possible control of diseases

Combat [verb] – fight; to take action to reduce or prevent something
