IELTS SPEAKING PART 1: BOREDOM [ANSWERS]

Some boring things include listening to a lousy speaker or long lectures, queuing, waiting, and watching a long and uninteresting movie. Talk about these in your IELTS Speaking exam.

IELTS Speaking Part 1: Boredom

PART 1

BEING BORED / BOREDOM

ANSWERS

Do you ever get bored?

(Answer 1)

Of course! I easily get bored when I’m waiting for someone, especially when I have to wait for 30 minutes or more. Therefore, if I have to meet with someone, I always tell them not to be late. Also, I feel bored listening to lectures or speeches that are not interesting or when the speaker doesn’t know how to interact with his audience.

(Answer 2)

Yes, who doesn’t get bored? Feeling bored is a natural feeling – we all feel that from time to time, especially when we’re watching an uninteresting movie, listening to a lecture from a monotonous speaker, and waiting for someone for a long time. The last time I felt so bored was last week.

What kinds of things are boring to you? / What kinds of things make you feel bored?

(Answer 1)

Well, reading thick novels or watching movies that are completely uninteresting, waiting for someone for such a long period of time, queueing, and heavy traffic. If I’m in this situation, I can’t help myself (unable to control my actions) but feel so frustrated because my time is only wasted. So, as much as possible, I make sure not to be involved in any of those cases. My life is just so good to deal with boredom. (Smiling)

(Answer 2)

I don’t easily get bored as I’m a very patient person, however, if I talk to someone who can’t handle conversations or doesn’t make any effort to converse, then that’s the time that I get bored.  Other than that (apart from that), I can deal with those things that are boring to some people.

(Answer 3)

I’m an impatient type of person so I hate queuing (forming a line to wait for something or someone) at the bank, listening to long speeches without any interaction from the audience, and doing tasks that are repetitive. I try to avoid being in any of these situations as I don’t want my time to go to waste.

What do you do when you feel bored?

(Answer 1)

If I’m at home, I simply take a nap to refresh my mind or recharge my batteries. However, if I’m outside like I’m stuck in traffic, I just listen to music or read something on my smartphone because normally I can’t do anything in those situations. I try my very best not to get irritated because it’ll only make my day bad.

(Answer 2)

Well, feeling bored is normal, we all feel that from time to time so I don’t normally take it seriously as I don’t want to get upset. Anyway, I just do something that would change my mood. For example, if I talk to someone who is boring, I change the topic or I just politely leave. Or if I’m waiting for someone at a mall and that person is extremely late, I just eat something in a restaurant to make myself better.

(Answer 3)

Well, since I’m a bookworm (a person who devotes time to reading), I usually read novels, especially those that are romantic as they make me feel thrilled. Also, I often binge-watch (watching several episodes of TV programs or different movies in succession by means of DVD or digital streaming) some Netflix shows, I can actually do that for hours and hours. These are my ways to kill boredom (to put an end to it).

Adjectives with -ing endings (thrilling; boring) are used when talking about situations.

Do you think going to school is boring?

(Answer 1)

Absolutely not! It’s fun going to school as we get to meet new people, learn some things that can help us develop ourselves, interact with teachers or students who have great minds, and we get to join some competitions or student activities that promote holistic (entirety) development. I think those people who believe that schools are boring are indolent (lazy) or don’t have an interest in going to school at all.

(Answer 2)

I think not all the time but sometimes. It’s sometimes boring because some teachers are kind of boring. For instance, they don’t have the energy to teach students, or their teaching strategies are too conventional (traditional). Aside from that, schools are sometimes boring, especially when the administrators are too controlling with their students, that is, students can’t completely express themselves because the school regulations restrict them.

Do you feel more bored now than when you were young?

(Answer 1)

I think so because I’m an impatient person. As I said earlier, I hate waiting for someone, and I hate queueing, being stuck in traffic, and things like that (things similar to those you’re discussing). In the past, especially during my childhood days, I was completely different. I don’t think I knew about boredom during those times as all I wanted was to play and have fun with my friends. I think there weren’t any dull moments back then.

(Answer 2)

Considering my responsibilities as an adult, I can’t be bored. Hahaha! I should have the energy and motivation to work and I never allow myself to get bored with my work because I have bills to pay. Well, when I was a kid, I got easily bored and I threw tantrums (to lose my temper in a noisy and uncontrolled way) from time to time because I didn’t know how to control myself then.

Do you think that young people these days get bored easily?

(Answer 1)

Based on my observation, not at all. Nowadays, young people have so many ways to keep themselves entertained such as surfing the web, chatting or socializing with their friends on social media platforms, partying, and filming themselves hoping to get famous, and things like that. It seems to me that the younger generation doesn’t know what boredom is.

(Answer 2)

I’m not sure about that. I think it depends on the person. Some young people don’t feel bored easily because they have different means to entertain themselves such as vlogging or taking pictures, and some easily lose their interest in someone or something because they’re simply impatient.
