IELTS TOPIC VOCABULARY: HISTORY
Here is the list of topic vocabulary words and expressions about history that will surely help you improve your mark in the criterion, Lexical Resource.
History is one of the challenging topics among IELTS Speaking test-takers as the majority are not really into talking about it. As we know, a lot of students find it boring in their classes, they don’t pay enough attention to learning about the events that happened in their own country or the world in general, in school. That would be a big problem when they take the IELTS exam and get this topic.
However, it’s never too late to learn a bit of history. Below are some of the expressions one can use when talking about history.
Bloody revolution [noun] – a resistance or rebellion against the government in which many people are killed
Antonym: bloodless revolution
In the past, a bloody revolution occurred because the opposition and the government could not compromise.
Democracy [noun] – a system of government where citizens have the right to elect their leaders; people have the right to express their opinion against the government without fear of being killed
Too much democracy in a country makes citizens undisciplined.
Fascism [noun] – an authoritarian form of government; forces suppression to those who oppose the government; related to dictatorial power
Fascism became popular in Europe in the early 20th century.
Genocide [noun] – the massive killing of people intentionally
Synonyms: racial killing; massacre; indiscriminate killing
I just couldn’t understand the reason why genocide had happened in the past.
History repeats itself [proverb] – the same events that happened in the past will happen over and over again
It seems that history is going to repeat itself for that nation, more people will be killed for expressing their disgust toward the government.
Junta [noun] |dʒʌntə|– a military or political group that governs a country after taking power by force
It’s just hard to live in a country that is under a military junta.
Nazi [noun] /ˈnɑːtsi/ – any member of the fascist National German Workers’ party which was founded in 1919; and in 1933 was politically controlled by Adolf Hitler in Germany
Nazi [derogatory] – anyone who thinks like a Nazi who practices brutality or racism
We will never forget the brutality that the Nazis inflicted on Jews.
Overthrow a government [expression] – to remove the highest leader of a nation
The citizens couldn’t bear the tyranny of their leader and decided to overthrow his government.
Rewrite history [expression] – it means making people believe that something occurred in a particular way when it is not the truth
Some countries rewrite history that the young generation becomes blinded by the truth.
The course of history [phrase] – the way things happened or going to happen
The invention of flying cars could change the course of history in terms of automobiles.
Tyranny [noun] – cruel and oppressive form of government
There are refugees simply because there is so much tyranny in some countries.
Uprising [noun] – the act of rebellion Synonyms: revolution; resistance
We owe our freedom now to our countrymen in the past who braved themselves by holding massive uprisings to overthrow the Spanish colonizers.
