IELTS WRITING Task 2:
More and more people no longer read newspapers or watch TV programs to get news. They get news about the world through the internet. Is this a positive or negative development?
SAMPLE ESSAY
The majority of people nowadays choose to read or watch news online rather than learn it from the traditional media. In my opinion, this development is both favorable (positive; approving) and unfavorable (negative; disapproving) among the general public and the traditional news industry.
To start with, accessing news online is what the majority of people prefer doing since the time that the internet became a source of publishing news as it is more convenient. Recently, people can read or watch the news on the internet regardless (despite; not being affected) of time or the place where they are, unlike in the past when they needed to wait for a certain time slot on TV or radio to watch or listen to the news. In addition to that, they had to rush home from work if they did not want to miss the latest news to be aired on TV. To add more, the existence of online news helps people save money from subscribing to newspaper companies because acquiring news online is of no cost. These benefits make people opt (choose) to read or watch news online over accessing news from traditional news media outlets.
However, despite these conveniences brought by the internet in accessing news, these pose (create; cause) negative impacts on the general public and traditional news agencies. Many people are deceived (to be misled) by the proliferation (rapid increase in numbers) of fake news since they fail to verify (to make sure that something is accurate) the source of the news. They believe everything that is published online and spread false information to others. The lack of education about news accuracy is a big challenge for the general public. On the other hand, some news agencies are losing revenue, and worse some of them go bankrupt (go out of business) as people choose to get news online because it is free. Thus, many workers in traditional news media companies lose their jobs.
To conclude, the trend in which more people prefer to read or watch news online instead of getting the news from conventional news outlets brings both positive and negative development to people and the traditional news industry.
