IELTS WRITING Task 2:
It is not necessary for people to travel to other places to learn about the culture. We can learn as much as from books, films, and the Internet. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
SAMPLE ESSAY
It is believed by some people that traveling to learn about different cultures is not important since acquiring (getting; obtaining) knowledge about cultures can be learned through educational materials such as books, online articles, and movies. While I agree that people can educate themselves about cultures using those tools, I believe they can only understand the depth (seriousness) of one’s culture by experiencing it.
It is true that learning about different cultures can easily be achieved by simply reading books or articles published online. People nowadays have easy access to information that details (gives exact or complete information) how people from different cultural backgrounds live their lives. Thus, it makes them informed about other cultures that have to be respected. In addition to that, movies or some documentaries that feature the lifestyle, culture, and tradition of people from different parts of the world provide audiences understanding of the life that locals have. Through those movies, they get educated about the things that they avoid doing so they will not offend (hurt someone’s feelings) the locals. Therefore, the use of educational materials is enough to understand and respect other people’s cultures.
However, I believe that the way to fully understand other cultures is to experience them in person and this can be realized (cause to happen) through traveling to a place where one wants to experience the life of the locals. Recently, a great number of people from the West have traveled and lived in Asian countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines to deeply understand and experience what Asian living is. They live in various provinces in those countries and interact with the locals, and that gives them a new perspective of life and some admit that they get to appreciate the little things in life. This is because their first-hand experience of Asian culture and tradition humbles (to make someone understand that they are not as important as they thought they were) them and makes them appreciative of cultural differences. All these things can never be felt by simply reading what is written in books or what is depicted in movies.
In conclusion, educational materials that talk about different cultures and traditions around the world provide people with good knowledge about cultural differences but it is traveling to various places and personally experiencing local cultures that truly makes them more knowledgeable, understanding, and respectful of other cultures.
